Javier joins Liverpool

ARGENTINE midfielder Javier Mascherano finally became a Liverpool player today after the Premier League approved his move from West Ham United.

Mascherano, who had already played for two other clubs in the past 12 months, was given special permission by FIFA for the transfer at the end of January but the Premier League said on February 1 it would take time to consider the application.

"The Premier League has today confirmed that the application by Liverpool FC to register Javier Mascherano as a player has been accepted," it said on its website.

"The Premier League is satisfied that the contractual arrangements proposed by Liverpool are consistent with its rules."

Under FIFA rules, a player cannot play competitively for more than two clubs between July 1 and June 30 the following year.

Mascherano had already appeared for Corinthians in Brazil and West Ham in England during that period.

FIFA ruled in January that the 22-year-old, who only completed two full matches for West Ham in a total of seven appearances, was an exceptional case partly because the South American and European seasons overlap.

There were no details of the contract agreed, although it has been widely reported by the media to be an 18-month deal.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez happy to got West Ham United midfielder Javier Mascherano’s services in an 18-month loan deal.The Daily Mail has reported on Tuesday that the signing will be completed on Wednesday
Benitez, who had chase on his target in spite of the FIFA rule being a hurdle, said on Monday night: “We have an agreement to take him on loan for 18 months then we have an option to sign him permanently.”
The 22-year-old Argentina midfielder had been having a terrible time at Upton Park since he arrived from Corinthians in the summer.
Benitez is also confident that Mascherano can do the good job of a holding midfielder and is capable of playing lot better than he did at West Ham. Now, Xabi is only Liverpool defensive midfielder.
Second Liverpool are also believed to signed Spanish central midfielder Francisco Manuel Duran Vazquez, 18, from Malaga, Spanish newspaper AS has reported.
Duran will arrive to England on Wednesday after discussions were concluded with agent.
"I have spoken with Rafa Benitez," said the teenager. "And I believe that this is the best option for me.
"To play for Liverpool is a dream for me and now I only desire to fight to play finally for the club."
