DIC: No early Liverpool sale, transfer cash available

December 28, 2006

Liverpool's potential new owners Dubai International Capital have rubbished reports they would sell the club in seven years.

Dubai International Capital are in talks about a £450million takeover.

But they issued a statement responding to rumours they would only be in charge until around 2014.

They said: "DIC has not yet formally made an offer, never mind completed a deal. Certainly there are no plans to exit an acquisition we have not even bought yet.

"What DIC is doing is planning to make sure that, if a deal is done, Liverpool has the best possible funding in place going forward under DIC stewardship.

"This is particularly important as we would need to get on with the stadium early in 2007 and it takes time to sort out the necessary financing.

"This is also important in terms of making sure cash is available for the ongoing strengthening of the squad.

"DIC is a very serious investor with considerable resources at its disposal.

"We believe we understand the responsibilities that come with owning Liverpool Football Club.

"DIC has made it clear that, should a deal be concluded, it would not interfere in the day-to-day running of the club."

Merry chistmas from RAFA

Wherever you are celebrating this festive season, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyal support during 2006 and wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

Being manager of Liverpool Football Club continues to be a great honour for me and I can assure you that I, along with my staff and my players, am still driven by total determination and hunger to bring more trophies to Anfield.

Over the past twelve months we have brought two more pieces of silverware back to the club after beating West Ham in an incredible FA Cup final back in May and then lifting the Community Shield in August.

We know this club is all about winning trophies and making the fans happy and that is why we are all so pleased to have again enjoyed a successful year.

The job now is to ensure we keep moving forward and to keep improving as a team and as a squad. I remain convinced we have a better set of players now than this time twelve months ago, but we know there is still work to do to reach the level we are aiming for.

We have brought in a number of new players during the year and I am confident they will all have an important role to play in our quest for honours in the future. At the same time, a number of players left us during 2006 and I continue to wish them all the best with their new clubs.

As you will all know, there is much talk about the future of the club with reports that an investment deal is looming. I have remained focused solely on football and on my team while all the talk has been going on, but I am sure David Moores and Rick Parry will make the right decision in the best interests of the club and I look forward to being a part of what I am sure is going to be a very bright future at Liverpool.

As always, you will have a massive role to play in that future. I’ve said it before and I will say it again; you are the best fans in the world and I can promise you all that we’ll be working as hard as possible to bring you more of the success you truly deserve.

I hope you all have a great Christmas and a fantastic 2007.

Best wishes.

Rafa.

LIVERPOOL FC: 10 LFC LEGENDS REVIEW 2006

How was 2006 for you? We asked 10 Kop legends just that as we looked back on the year that was and asked for their Liverpool hopes for 2007.
/noticias.info/ How was 2006 for you and what was the highlight?

Ronnie Whelan: "The highlight of the year was undoubtedly winning the FA Cup. I was in Cardiff and it was a great atmosphere and a great match. Liverpool didn't play great on the day but the drama and the overall occasion was just great and Stevie G was immense in the game. It was an honour to be there watching it. Overall the start to this season has been okay but we have lost too many away games which has been the biggest disappointment. But we are playing really well now and things are starting to pick up."

Phil Neal: "The highlight has to be winning the FA Cup in Cardiff. The quality of the goal Steven Gerrard scored to make it 3-3 was something else, so much so I couldn't wait to get home and watch it again and again on the TV."

Jan Molby: "Overall the majority of 2006 has been a good year for Liverpool. The highlight would have to be the FA Cup win over West Ham which was something else."

Roy Evans: "We all hoped we would be a little bit closer to challenging for the title this season but I still think progress is being made and everyone is right behind Rafa and rightly so in my opinion. The highlight has to be winning the FA Cup. I also think the investment news is another highlight of 2006 and the important thing is the potential buyers seem to have the Liverpool tradition at heart which is massively important."

Ian Callaghan: "Obviously winning the FA Cup was fantastic and finishing third in the Premiership was a good reward for a good season. How outstanding again by the way was Stevie G?"

Phil Thompson: "The highlight for me was finishing just nine points behind Chelsea last season after finishing 37 behind the previous season. Winning the FA Cup was great but for me the performance in the Premiership in its own right is progress."

Ian Rush: "For me winning the FA Cup has to be the highlight. I also feel we made a lot of progress in 2006. We had a good season and winning the FA Cup was a reward for that."

Ian St John: "The FA Cup Final was the highlight. I was actually in Turkey playing golf with the Variety Club. I watched it in the club house with some guys from London who were supporting West Ham so it was extra special for me to see Liverpool win. The main man Steven Gerrard did the business for us and it was one of the best FA Cup Finals ever. As one of the players who played in Liverpool's first FA Cup win in 1965 always when we win the FA Cup it's extra special. It was just an incredible game and Gerrard's goal was an incredible moment."

Gary McAllister: "The FA Cup was the big highlight for me. It was such a great day and the way Steven Gerrard turned the game around for Liverpool was just fantastic."

Alan Kennedy: "The highlight for everybody is to get to a cup final and Liverpool did that in one of the best games we've seen for a long time no doubt about it. It was typical Liverpool as we were down and struggling at 3-2 down then all of a sudden up pops Steven Gerrard and then Pepe Reina came into his own when we won on penalties. I've seen so many good games that Liverpool have been involved in and 2006 has been a really good year."

Who was the main man for Liverpool in 2006

Ronnie Whelan: "Over the last two years it usually comes down to two scousers in Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. Stevie has been head and shoulders above everyone else as he dragged the team to win the FA Cup Final and many other games. As we near the end of the year he is back to his best again and Stevie G is my man of 2006."

Phil Neal: "One man, Steven Gerrard. He had a fantastic 2006 and scored 23 goals from midfield. He had an absolute stormer of a year."

Jan Molby: "Obviously Steven Gerrard will get all the plaudits for winning the FA Cup but for me Jamie Carragher has been just as important. Carra has such a high level of consistency so I will say Jamie is Liverpool's man of 2006."

Roy Evans: "I'm still a great believer that the two Liverpool lads in Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher are our best players. Steven is my man of 2006 as he is the captain and always leads by example. He has pulled us out of trouble when we have needed him and none more so than in the FA Cup Final."

Ian Callaghan: "I never look any further than Stevie G. He gives so much to this team and when he is doing it we do it."

Phil Thompson: "Stevie G without a shadow of a doubt. He started the season scoring a lot of goals in the Champions League qualifiers and ended it by scoring that fantastic goal against West Ham."

Ian Rush: "It's got to be Steven Gerrard. He was instrumental in us winning the FA Cup and he is hugely important to the team."

Ian St John: "I think Steven Gerrard was the main man, not just for 2006 but for every season. I just think he is such a very special player with so much enthusiasm and drive. He will get the team out of trouble and win us matches."

Gary McAllister: "I'm thinking back to the FA Cup Final and a certain man who almost single handedly won Liverpool the Cup. It has to be Steven Gerrard."

Alan Kennedy: "For me there are several contenders. A lot of people will pick Steven Gerrard for the way he has taken a game by the scruff of the neck when we've needed him and he is the man for all seasons. Jamie Carragher has been absolutely tremendous as well and I also think Pepe Reina. Some people have criticised him but I think he has done well and kept a lot of clean sheets. Sami Hyypia had a good year as well but if I have to put my finger on one name then it's Jamie Carragher the main man for me."

What are your LFC hopes for 2007?

Ronnie Whelan: "I said at the start of the season that it would be Chelsea or Manchester United who would win the league but the way Liverpool are playing you never know. We have just got to keep going and the form of Bellamy and Kuyt up front is encouraging for us. I also hope in 2007 that the money from the take over comes in and we can build a new stadium and give Rafa cash to strengthen the squad."

Phil Neal: "My first wish would be for us to beat Barcelona in the Champions League as I am really looking forward to that match. Also if Santa could grant me a wish it would be to win our home games against the teams that matter because we've got some crackers coming up in the New Year when Chelsea, Everton, Manchester United and Arsenal come to Anfield."

Jan Molby: "I know we always say this but it is to get closer to the teams above us and fight them out for the Premiership title. If we can do that then I don't see it being very long before we are all celebrating the league championship returning to Anfield again."

Roy Evans: "To keep on improving on the pitch and get closer to the top two. If we can do that then I honestly feel we can win a title and get back to where we feel we belong as one of the top teams again."

Ian Callaghan: "Every year we want a title challenge and this one will be no exception. It's been too long now since we won one so after a slow start to this season we are now playing really well so hopefully we can even closer to Chelsea and Manchester United in 2007. I am also very much looking forward to the mouth watering Champions League tie against Barcelona. If we can go to Spain and get a good result then I can't wait for the second leg in front of a full house at Anfield. This is what Anfield is all about having great European night's."

Phil Thompson: "I'd like to see us go on a major run right up until the end of the season and put Chelsea and Manchester United under real pressure. That would be real progress. We have also got the Barcelona game to look forward to. When we played Chelsea in the semi-final Jose Mourinho said 99 per cent of Liverpool fans thought we would beat them. Well Jose 100 per cent of Liverpool fans think we will beat Barcelona!"

Ian Rush: "To keep winning trophies and keep progressing and looking forward. Like every Liverpool supporter I want us to win the league again and hope we can get closer to doing that. We have also got the Barcelona tie to look forward to and I think if we can beat them then we can go on to win the Champions League. I think winning the Champions League is a big possibility for Liverpool."

Ian St John: "I hope we can get to the cup final again and I would love to see us win the Champions League again. I know it's a tall order but why not? My main hope is to see us win the league title. It's been a long time and too long for a club like Liverpool and I want to see us up there challenging and then win it and become the number one team again."

Gary McAllister: "I would love to see us reach the last 16 of the Champions League. People say Liverpool are big underdogs and yes it's going to be tough but when we beat them in 2001 we were underdogs. If we can beat Barcelona then there is no reason why we can't go all the way to the final and hopefully win number six."

Alan Kennedy: "Every year is a big year for Liverpool but we still can get very close to Manchester United and Chelsea in my opinion. I think we might struggle to overtake them in terms of winning the title this season but you never know and we are moving in the right direction. My message to those people who doubted us at the start of the season is this. Judge us at the end of the season and see where we are. We also have the Barcelona game which is one everyone will want to see and I am really looking forward to it. I remember back in 2001 when we beat them at Anfield and Gary Mac scored the penalty and the atmosphere was fantastic and I think we can beat them again."

Liverpool 2 Watford 0

FOOTBALL LIVE REPORTS
Picture Pennant and Bouazza have eyes on the ball.
By Paul Walker, PA Sport
Liverpool made it 26 home league games without defeat as they overcame Watford this afternoon - equalling a run last accomplished under Kenny Dalglish in 1991.

Rafael Benitez's men may not quite be up to that vintage, but they are on the sort of run now with four straight league wins, that at least should secure them another season in the Champions League.

Watford made them work hard. It was not until Craig Bellamy broke the deadlock 62 seconds into the second period with a neat chip - his fourth goal in five games - that the Anfield men started to look comfortable.

Adrian Boothroyd's side are resilient, fit, organised and full of powerful players, but depend on set-pieces to carry their threat.

Liverpool were forced to concentrate against such a barrage, and it took them until two minutes from time for Xabi Alonso seal it with a spectacular 25 yarder.

Liverpool brought in young Danish defender Daniel Agger and midfielder Luis Garcia in place of Sami Hyypia and Mark Gonzalez from the side that won 3-0 at Charlton last weekend.

For Watford, there was a boost when goalkeeper Ben Foster was declared fit following a knee injury - and he was certainly a busy man.

The Anfield fans were expecting a convincing win but they found it tough getting space and time against Watford's renowned resilience.

Twice in the opening minutes Steven Gerrard was almost clear in the box but the giant frame of Danny Shittu managed to get in the way. That proved the story of the first period.

Watford have won praise for the work ethic and desire, and the ball spent an awful long time in the air as their set-piece routines fell into Liverpool's defence, who did not always deal well with the tactic.

But Bellamy was causing immense problems with his pace at the other end. He gave Jay DeMerit a torrid time but his efforts to set up colleagues failed to produce the breakthrough.

Bellamy saw a fierce shot strike DeMerit following a John Arne Riise run and cross before Dirk Kuyt was next into the act with a low drive that Foster pushed away.

But for all Liverpool's dominance, Watford missed a sitter on 39 minutes when Jose Reina fumbled away a cross from Ashley Young, and unmarked Alhassan Bangura scooped the loose ball over the bar from 10 yards.

Then Agger ran 50 yards from deep unchecked before firing in a drive that Foster fumbled, but Garcia could not guide the rebound into an empty net.

But Watford's resistance lasted just a couple of minutes of the second period when Kuyt's touch sent Gerrard storming through the middle, and his neat pass found Bellamy on the edge of the box.

He was fractionally onside and turned to control the ball and lift it over Foster for his sixth goal of the season.

Watford sent on Anthony McNamee to play on the left, Darius Henderson making way with Hameur Bouazza moving up front - the visitors looking for width and pace to try to salvage something from the game.

And it almost came on 63 minutes when Tommy Smith got down the right and fired over a cross that Young met with a flicked header, Reina touching the ball over the bar.

Liverpool then sent on Gonzalez for Jermaine Pennant on 65 minutes and with his first touch he sent Bellamy away, just failing with a header when the Welshman's shot bounced up off Foster.

Jamie Carragher, who scored his first league goal since 1999 last weekend, almost added another on 74 minutes when he peeled off at the back post onto a Gerrard corner. He hit a fierce volley that Foster somehow managed to palm over the bar from point-blank range.

On 81 minutes Bellamy was replaced by Peter Crouch, while Watford sent on Damien Francis for Bangura, and Crouch hit the post from a Garcia pass on 85 minutes.

It seemed Liverpool could not settle things but with two minutes left that elusive goal arrived.

Kuyt raced down the left and with his second attempt, slipped the ball back for Alonso fire in a spectacular 25-yarder into the top corner.

Liverpool Close To Signing Lucas Neill From Blackburn - Rovers Set To Rope In Kiev's Andriy Nesmachnyi in Premiership

Submitted by Niraj Prabhu on Thu, 2006-12-21 14:35.

Australian defender Lucas Neill’s transfer from Blackburn Rovers to English powerhouse Liverpool appears imminent, according to a report on The Herald Sun.

With Blackburn Rovers reportedly set to sign a replacement full back in Ukraine international Andriy Nesmachnyi, the indications are clear that Neill will end months of speculation to seek his way out of Ewood Park in the January transfer window.

Britain's The Guardian newspaper online edition had earlier reported Nesmachnyi, who plays for Dynamo Kiev, was in England for a medical with Rovers and that his signing would allow Neill to complete the move to Anfield.

Neill's transfer fee will be in the region of $4 million, added the report.

Neill has also backed his national team to excel at their maiden Asian Cup tournament in July in Thailand.

Messi aims for Liverpool

maltasport.com 19 December 2006

Barcelona starlet Lionel Messi is targeting the UEFA Champions League ties with Liverpool as he bids to recover full fitness.

This was revealed by the Argentina prodigy in an interview with eurosport.com.

Messi, who was named World Soccer's Young Player of the Year this week, has been out since November after undergoing an operation to repair a broken metatarsal.

After seeing Barca slump to a surprise FIFA Club World Cup defeat to Internacional at the weekend, the 19-year-old is itching to get back in action in time to meet Rafa Benitez's Merseysiders in February.

"My objective is to be physically recuperated in order to play against Liverpool in the Champions League and I believe that this will be possible," he told eurosport.com.

"I am not nervous now about the injury. I am very mature and know I need to spend the most time for a perfect recovery.

"I missed the match against Chelsea but now I want to play Liverpool because Barcelona need my help in a knockout game that is not easy.

"The Reds are a peculiar team," he explained. "They play in England but the style of the coach and many of the players is nearly Spanish.

"This will be an extra problem for Barcelona.

"Any rivals are dangerous in Europe at this time but Liverpool are a team that can be beaten by Barcelona. Lyon or Manchester United are most difficult today.

"I expect an open game because the English play without defensive caution and with a style similar to Barcelona.

"Sincerely, I believe Liverpool are worried about playing against us because we are the champions of Europe and that strikes fear in any rivals.

"I desire to travel to Liverpool with much work done and holding an advantage to qualify for the next round.

"A 2-0 or 3-0 score will be perfect for Barca.

"Always, we need to not concede a goal in Camp Nou to avoid problems at Anfield."

Liverpool v Arsenal - Postponed

By James Carroll
Date: 19/12/2006

Liverpool's League Cup quarter-final tie with Arsenal was called off this evening after heavy fog descended on Anfield. Referee Martin Atkinson made the decision to postpone the game after a pitch inspection.

The call was made at 6:45pm after officials had failed to come to a decision in an earlier inspection.

Rafael Benitez and Arsene Wenger were left unhappy by the decision and both felt that the conditions weren't bad enough to force the game to be called off.

"In the opinions of myself and Arsene, it was possible to play this game," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"We must respect the referee's decision but we don't agree with it. In these conditions we could have played. The referee said to us that he had difficulty seeing both corners of the pitch and that it could be difficult for his assistants.

"A lot of people were looking forward to this game and it's really difficult to explain why it was called off. We have a problem now because if we draw against Arsenal in the FA Cup then when are we going to play this game? Maybe we can play for both Cups in one game."

Wenger added: "I'm disappointed because we wanted to play and so did Liverpool. Unfortunately we weren't able to influence the decision of the referee, even though we tried."

No date has been scheduled for the rearranged fixture but early indications suggest that it could be played in the week commencing 8th January, after the FA Cup tie between the two teams.

Liverpool Football Club have told supporters to keep hold of their unused tickets as they will be valid for the rearranged game while those who entered the stadium must contact the ticket office for a replacement ticket.

Fans who wish not to attend the match will be given a refund.

Liverpool linked with Lille's Bodmer

tribalfooball.com - December 17, 2006

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is being linked with Lille midfielder Mathieu Bodmer.

Benitez wants to land a new ball-winning midfielder in January and has also been scouting Lazio's Gaby Mudingayi in recent weeks.

The News of the World says Benitez is ready to bid for Frenchman Bodmer, though Lille will be reluctant to cash in with a looming Champions League tie against Manchester United to look forward to.

Liverpool boss Benitez won't give up on Premiership title

tribalfooball.com - December 17, 2006

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez insists they can still win the league this season.

After Saturday's 3-0 victory at Charlton, Benitez defiantly remarked: "I remember being at Valencia when we were seven points behind Real Madrid at Christmas time and I said to two or three of my players at the team hotel that we would still win the League.

"They told me afterwards they were laughing when they heard that. But we did win it by seven points or something like that.

"Maybe it will not be the case this time, because we have two teams above us at the top of the table.

"The only thing you can do is keep playing well, keep the team with the same mentality, keep scoring goals and maybe we will look at the table then.

"My aim is to keep on improving. Like today. We need to finish off this kind of game. If we can continue scoring goals and keeping clean sheets, we don't need to worry about the other teams.

"Who knows? It is a long race. If we keep finding a balance to win games and rest players, we can carry on the challenge.

"I have confidence this season will be better than last season."

Liverpool climbs to 3rd place as Arsenal held to draw

www.chinaview.cn 2006-12-17 09:24:50
LONDON, Dec 16 (Xinhua) --

Liverpool leapfrogged to the third place of the Premiership table on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Charlton, while Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by visiting Portsmouth.

Xabi Alonso scored an early penalty and Craig Bellamy and captian Steven Gerrard found net, giving Liverpool an easy victory over a Charlton side rooted in the relegation zone.

With the third consecutive high-scoring league win, Liverpool moved past Arsenal on 31 points to the third place.

Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins scored a double for Newcastle United as they chalked up a 2-1 home win over bottom club Watford.

Striker David Bentley got a late winner as Blackburn Rovers won 2-1 at Reading and Sheffield United beat Wigan Athletic 1-0 away.

Despite another big victory, after 4-0 routs of Wigan and Fulham, Liverpool are still well trailing champions Chelsea (39) and leaders Manchester United (44), who both play on Sunday.

After four 3-0 wins and four 1-1 draws, Arsenal fought back from the brink of a first home league defeat at their new Emirates Stadium.

Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor scored in the 58th minute, just three minutes after replacing Jeremy Aliadiere, when he sidefooted in a good ball from teenager Theo Walcott.

Arsenal levelled two minutes later when a deflected Adebayor cross found its way to Walcott and his ball into the area was steered home by Brazilian midfielder Gilberto.

Barcelona to face Liverpool

December 16, 2006 - 9:36AM
The Sydney Morning Herald.

FC Barcelona and Liverpool, the last two champions of Europe, were drawn against each other for the first knockout round of the Champions League.

Barcelona, who qualified for the last 16 after a shaky group campaign, will play the first leg of the two-leg clash at their Nou Camp stadium in February.

Another mouth-watering two-leg match-up for the next phase of the competition will be FC Porto's clashes with English champions Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho led the Portuguese side to the Champions League title in 2004 before joining the London club and leading them to two consecutive Premiership titles.

FC Porto general manager Antero Henrique said he was anticipating the chance to get one over on his club's former coach.

"Are we going to call up Jose Mourinho before the match? No, afterwards to perhaps tell him, 'sorry for winning'," Henrique quipped.

Manchester United, who lead Mourinho's side by five points in the Premiership race, were given a boost after being drawn with French side Lille, who are making their first appearance in the last 16.

Lille's assistant general manager Jerome Lestir said it was a dream tie but one which was tempered by the formidable challenge ahead of them.

"We've got a lot of respect for United, but we can't afford to give them too much either," Lestir said.

Group G winners Arsenal, beaten finalists last year, will also be happy having been drawn against Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.

The fifth British side in the competition, Celtic, were drawn against AC Milan, who dramatically lost the final to Liverpool in 2005, having won the trophy two years earlier.

Elsewhere French champions Lyon, one of the big favourites to go all the way this season, were given a manageable draw to AS Roma.

On form Serie A leaders Inter Milan were drawn with Spanish side Valencia, twice beaten finalists of Europe's premier club competition while nine-times winners Real Madrid were drawn against German champions Bayern Munich.

Real and Bayern last met in the competition in 2003-2004 when Zinedine Zidane scored a second leg winner to fire the Spanish giants into the quarter-finals.

Draw

FC Porto (POR) v Chelsea (ENG)

Celtic (SCO) v AC Milan (ITA)

PSV Eindhoven (NED) v Arsenal (ENG)

Lille (FRA) v Manchester United (ENG)

AS Roma (ITA) v Lyon (FRA)

Barcelona (ESP) v Liverpool (ENG)

Real Madrid (ESP) v Bayern Munich (GER)

Inter Milan (ITA) v Valencia (ESP)

(Matches to be played - first round on February 20/21 and return leg on March 6/7)

Liverpool for Amelia

Liverpool have joined Milan on the trail of Livorno goalkeeper Marco Amelia.

"Liverpool want him in January", Carlo Pallavicino, the player's agent, told local radio in Rome.

Pallavicino also confirmed that he had not held talks with Milan, nor is his client currently considering a move to the San Siro.

"Milan? I have not heard anything from them. They have never called me or the player. He is probably not in their immediate plans."

With Milan keeper Nelson Dida's future in doubt, Amelia had been rumoured as a Rossoneri target, particularly after the former became injured.

Savage tells Rovers fans to show Neill respect

Savage tells Rovers fans to show Neill respect
By Graham Chase
Published: 15 December 2006

Robbie Savage has told the Ewood Park crowd to respect the Blackburn Rovers captain Lucas Neill. The 28-year-old, who was close to a switch to Liverpool in August and is out of contract at the end of the season, has made it clear he wants to leave Rovers next month.

His stance, coupled with Blackburn's miserable recent fortunes, led to him being barracked during the 3-1 win over Newcastle at the weekend and question marks being raised over his captaincy. Neill was again booed when his name was read out before the 1-0 Uefa Cup win over Nancy on Wednesday. And when he scored an injury-time winner, he ran the length of the pitch with his ear cupped to Ewood's Blackburn End.

Despite the uneasy situation, Savage has backed his captain: "Lucas has been a great servant to this club," he said. "In this day and age the modern-day footballer has every right to keep his options open.

"I think the club bought him for £1m, he's been a great servant and while he's still a Blackburn player, if that's for another month or six months, the fans should get behind him. It's not right booing your own players, like when his name was read out at the beginning, and he answered them in the best way possible with the goal.

"Lucas isn't the first player to let his contract run down and he won't be the last and we hope he stays, but he's keeping his options open and that's up to him. Lucas is his own person. The lads want him to stay because he's a great character, a leader. Whatever he decides to do it's his choice."

Neill's strike meant Rovers that progress to the knockout phase as group winners and they will be drawn against one of the third-placed sides in today's draw.

Savage maintains the priority is the Premiership, where six defeats in eight matches have left Rovers a place and two points above the drop zone. "Whoever, we play at this stage it's going to be difficult and the knockout stage is exciting," he said. "It was important to win the group. It's not been a distraction, it's been great but Premiership status is more important.

"At this club we don't harp on about injuries but if you take Ryan Nelsen, Stephen Reid and Jason Roberts out long-term and add Brett Emerton and Zurab Khizanishvili, that's five first-team regulars. If we can hang in there and stay out of the bottom three until we get those players back and maybe get a couple of players in January, I'm sure we'll be fine."

Liverpool will move to new stadium in 2009

Liverpool will move to new stadium in 2009
tribalfooball.com - December 13, 2006

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is set to lead his team out of a new stadium in 2009.

The Times says Liverpool are understood to be close to awarding a contract for the construction of the new stadium. It is rumoured that the company in question is Laing O'Rourke plc, which built the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the City of Manchester Stadium, and the plan is that work on the Stanley Park site, barely quarter of a mile from Anfield, could begin by March, with Liverpool to relocate in time for the start of the 2009-10 season.

The speed of progress has delighted the Liverpool board, which has been unstinting in its commitment to the stadium project. The new stadium is also highly attractive to prospective new owners Dubai International Capital, which regards the construction as crucial to future revenue streams, although it is not clear whether it will consider selling the name of the stadium, as Reds chief Rick Parry has hinted the club may be forced to do.

Benitez: Youth key to Liverpool success

Benitez: Youth key to Liverpool success
tribalfooball.com - December 14, 2006

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez intends to continue to pursue the world's best young players, despite the promise of a massive transfer kitty from the club's new owners.

Benitez believes bringing in players like defensive duo Daniel Agger and Mark Gonzalez, both 22, remains crucial to the club's prospects.

"When we signed Agger we were looking for a young player with experience and quality who we knew would be good for the future," said Benitez.

"Both Agger and Mark Gonzalez are like this. Not only can they show their ability now, they are prospects.

"These are the types of player we are always looking for to improve the squad."

Agger, a £5.8million buy from Brondby was impressive in the victory against Fulham last weekend and Benitez added in the Liverpool Echo: "We knew he was strong in defence.

"But he can pass the ball well and move it around the pitch at a high tempo.

"You saw he did this very well against Fulham."

Gerrard: future is bright for Liverpool

Gerrard: future is bright for Liverpool
By Times Online and Agencies
Times Online December 14, 2006

Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool captain, believes the future is bright for the club, having spoken to one of the men spearheading an anticipated £450million takeover.

Dubai International Capital, the investment arm of Dubai's billionaire ruler Sheikh Mohammed, is set to make a formal offer for the Anfield side in the coming weeks.

The move would help assure Liverpool's long-held ambition of building a new 60,000-seat stadium, and there has been much keen anticipation among fans about the prospects of the Reds rivalling Chelsea in the transfer market.

After meeting DIC chief executive Sameer al-Ansari, who is likely to become the club's new chairman, following Saturday's 4-0 win over Fulham, Gerrard said the Reds' fans can look forward with optimism.

"I think the future is bright," he said. "I've been fortunate enough to meet with the people who are going to be taking over the club.

"I'm very excited. They assured me and the rest of the players that the club is going to be in safe hands and that the future is going to be really bright.

"The fans have been reading the same things as I've been reading and so they have got every right to be excited.

"Having met them, I'm even more excited now because I've heard their thoughts face to face."

Although Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has deeper pockets that even Chelsea's billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich, Rick Parry, the Liverpool chief executive, insisted the club is focused on a long-term strategy.

"We are focused on success but we want a club that will not be ludicrously profligate," Parry said. It is not just about throwing money at a challenge, that is not a sound long-term strategy.

"It is definitely not about being a rich man's plaything. It is about taking Liverpool FC to the next level and securing the future of the club for the next hundred years."

LIVERPOOL FC: DANIEL AGGER: THE BIG INTERVIEW

LIVERPOOL FC: DANIEL AGGER: THE BIG INTERVIEW

In liverpoolfc.tv's latest Big Interview, centre-back Daniel Agger talks of his desire to stay at Anfield long-term and explains why he shuns the limelight. The Dane also adopts a rather defensive approach in picking his LFC five-a-side team…

www.liverpoolfc.tv

You've been here for the best part of a year now, how have you settled into life at Liverpool?

I think I'm doing it pretty good. I like it here. I like the people here when I walk around the city. When I came here everyone was so nice and wanted to help. Maybe the only bad thing is the weather. It seems to be raining all the time.

It's not worse than Denmark, is it?

It's not great weather there, but it's not raining all the time. It's only a small detail though!

And Liverpool the city, what do you make of it?

It's a good city and I can see it's getting better and better every month I'm here. You can see the progression. I'm from a small part of Copenhagen. That's also a massive city.

Can you see yourself staying here for a while then, like your countryman Jan Molby?

I hope so. I don't like moving around and when I'm at one place I like to stay. I like it here, not only on the pitch but also off it.

How did Rafa persuade you to come here?

He didn't have to convince me to come here. It's Liverpool.

Were you aware his scouts were watching you while you were playing for Brondby?

No, not until the end. I was concentrating on my football because that's what I enjoy.

You became the most expensive Liverpool defender ever – does that put a lot of pressure on you?

As a footballer you have to live with the pressure. Every time you walk on to the pitch, especially at a big club like Liverpool, you want to win. If you cannot handle the pressure, you shouldn't be a footballer.

You've established yourself in the first team relatively quickly. Are you surprised how well things have gone for you?

My career has been two years so far and everything has happened so quickly. Two-and-a-half years ago I never dreamed I'd be a footballer. I was still at school with all my friends. I had lots of plans but I keep them to myself.

A lot of people say you've a similar style to Alan Hansen. How do you feel about such comparisons?

I know him but my name is Daniel. Of course it's nice to be compared to a good player but I don't want to be compared. I'm not him – I want to make a name for myself.

What's it like playing alongside Jamie Carragher and Sami Hyypia?

When I came to this club I knew there were two world class defenders. First of all I said I wanted to fight for my place, but then I also said I could learn lots from them. If you learn from the best you can be the best. They have been here for many years and have lots of experience, so I can still learn a lot from them. Every training session and every game I try to listen to them and do what they tell me to do. I know I play in my own way and that's why Liverpool bought me, but I try to pick up pieces from their games and mix it all together.

Which other centre-backs do you admire? Who would you say are the best in the Premiership?

Carra and Hyypia. When I was in Denmark I played with Per Nielsen and he helped me a lot. He played over 500 games for his club, which is amazing.

Is there one part of your game you'd like to improve?

Yes.

What is it?

All of it.

You maybe don't need to work on your shooting after scoring a couple of goals already this year. Do you have a goals target for the season?

No, I'm a defender. It's nice to score goals though.

Carra got one at the weekend, is there competition between the defenders to see who can score the most?

No, not yet, but maybe there could be.

Riise would take some beating, wouldn't he?

I will fight for it!

Do you score a lot in training?

Never.

Moving on to life off the pitch, what kind of things do you do in your spare time?

I keep that to myself.

For some reason the Spanish lads don't seem to like the food here. Can you understand that?

I like English food. There are a lot of good restaurants in Liverpool, they're perfect. But if you go to some of the supermarkets it's not so good, there's nothing to buy.

One thing the fans will have noticed is your tattoos. What’s on them?

They're just tattoos.

Is it right your dad came over with some friends to play a match against the Liverpool legends?

Yes, he plays as an amateur. He's okay. They lost 3-2 – it was a good game, I saw it. They scored in the last minute. I actually don't know all the names of the legends but my dad's team knew them all. My dad was over to watch me play.

What did he make of the atmosphere at Anfield?

I think he thought the same as everyone else when they go into that stadium. I know he likes to come here because it's very emotional.

What's it like as a player playing in front of such a special crowd?

I'm proud. It's quite something to be here at Liverpool. All the players will tell you it's difficult to explain what it's like.

You don't seem to like being in the limelight – is that a fair thing to say?

I'm not shy, it's just me. I'm here to play football, not be part of the big circus, so I just try to keep out of it.

Do you wish interviews and what-have-you wasn't part of the game?

Yes, but if it wasn't part of the game, football wouldn't be what it is, football wouldn't be as big. You have to find the right balance. It's something I have to live with, it's part of the game and I respect that. I speak to the journalists who want to speak to me but I don't go out and say, Do you want to speak to me? It's not that I don't care, it's just a bit like, why? If you can live your life by yourself and if you love to play football, you don't need the other things.

One thing we ask all the players is who'd make their LFC five-a-side team?

That's difficult. I can't choose between the goalkeepers. Finnan would definitely be there. Sami I think too, and Carra.

Three defenders?

I'm defensive! No, Carra can play in midfield.

Who's going to score the goals?

Let me think, who can I put there? Robbie, because it's five-a-side. If he's in the box and he gets the ball, he definitely scores. I've seen some videos of him when I was in Denmark.

Were you a Liverpool fan before you came here, then?

Not a fan really. I was not a fan of any team.

Finally Daniel, what are your ambitions as a footballer?

I have big ambitions but I keep them to myself.

Oh, nearly forgot to ask – when's the bandage coming off?

I don't know yet.
